Suitable for Beginners and Intermediates

Explore the delicate forms and textures of the natural world through botanical bas relief casting.
Over this weekend workshop, you’ll learn how to capture plants, leaves, seed heads and other natural forms by pressing them into clay to create detailed impression moulds. You’ll experiment with composition, layering and texture before casting your designs to create beautiful raised botanical reliefs.
We’ll look at selecting plants that cast successfully, preparing and rolling clay, arranging and pressing botanical material, refining your impressions, creating simple mould walls, mixing and pouring casting materials, and finishing your completed pieces.
Alongside the practical techniques, we’ll explore how these processes relate to jewellery and metal casting, and how botanical impressions can be developed further into jewellery, small sculptural objects and work suitable for casting in metal.
You are welcome to bring your own interesting leaves, grasses, flowers and seed heads to experiment with, and a selection of botanical materials will also be provided.
This workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as jewellers and makers interested in exploring casting, mould making and new ways of working with natural forms.
