As part of Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival we ran a workshop introducing local men to jewellery making, as part of our Reflections: Men, Making and Metal project.
–
Tutor Ramsay Pagett lead the session, where participants had the chance to try out traditional metalworking techniques and make their own silver ring. The project was about more than learning a new skill. We’re interested in the experience of making something by hand; the concentration, satisfaction and sense of achievement that can come from working with materials and learning practical skills alongside others.
–
As part of the wider project, we documented the experience through photography and invited participants to share some thoughts about making and creativity. These photographs and reflections have come together as a small exhibition, on show at Craft Central during the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival.
Refections from our new jewellery makers“Very cosy and supportive”“I loved the sense of creativity and of creating something tangible and beautiful.”“I would do it again and would encourage others to give it a go”“I enjoyed every second and I’ve gained a new hobby”“Ramsay was an incredible teacher, Ralph was an enormous help and all of the facilities were fantastic.”
