Join us for a relaxed day of making, learning and conversation as part of the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival.
Working alongside experienced jewellers, participants will learn a range of traditional jewellery and metalworking techniques before using their new skills to make their own silver ring to take home.
You’ll begin by working in copper or brass, learning how to use traditional jewellery tools and practising techniques including saw piercing, filing, texturing, forming and soldering. Once you’ve developed some confidence with the tools and processes, you’ll move on to silver and use these skills to create and finish your own ring.
No previous jewellery or metalworking experience is needed. The workshop will be taught step-by-step, with plenty of time to practise and work at your own pace.
At the heart of the day is the simple pleasure of making alongside other people. Practical craft can provide a focus for conversation, concentration and problem-solving, while the informal workshop environment gives people space to chat and connect as they work.
The workshop forms part of a wider project exploring making, men’s mental health and wellbeing, supported by the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival. Photographs from the project will be shared as part of the festival, celebrating the skills, conversations and experiences of the people taking part.

- Applying these techniques to make a finished silver ring
Who is this workshop for?
This workshop is suitable for complete beginners, and no previous jewellery-making experience is required.
All tools and materials, including silver for your finished ring, are provided. If you would like to make a ring for someone other than yourself, then you will need to know their ring size before the course.

- Please bring along glasses if you need them
- Wear appropriate clothing and footwear for a studio environment, including closed-toe shoes. Why not order yourself a CSSJ apron to make you feel right at home in your workshop?
- If you have long hair, please wear it up
