Intermediate Summer School

Level: Intermediate – Perfect for current students at CSSJ

How would you like to complete a term’s worth of tuition and jewellery making in just 5 days? Our Intermediate Summer School can turbo-charge your progress. Best of all – no packing up at the end of each day! Drop your tools at 4 pm and pick up where you left off the following morning. It’s amazing what you can accomplish with 5 full, inspirational days at the bench. This course is suitable for anyone beyond complete beginners level. There are options for simpler and more advanced techniques within each topic, so you can learn at your own level. Here is a taste of what we have in store – we’ll devote each day to teaching you a new technique enabling you to add texture, colour, or depth to your designs.

  • Titanium – Explore the alchemy of heat and colour using titanium – a fantastic alternative to working precious metals because of its ability to take on beautiful, iridescent hues. As well as using heat to bring out the colour, we’ll cover different cold connection techniques that you can take forward for use in loads of other non-precious materials such as driftwood, plastics or textiles.
  • Eco Etching – Take your designs to the next level with our introduction to eco-etching. We are the only studio in the country with this eco-friendly electro-etching system and we want to show you how it’s done! We’ll give you all the low-down on what resists to apply to your metal and how you can transfer a photographic or digital image onto metal! You can etch on brass, copper or silver with limitless design options.
  • Eco Casting – We’ll show you how to melt down precious metals and turn them into fabulous cast pieces of jewellery using simple tools and equipment. Learn how to save money by using up your scrap and transforming it into new pieces. We’ll explore different ways to re-form your metal including granulation, sand casting, and water casting. You’ll also get the opportunity to try out our collection of shot plates and our nifty hydraulic press!
  • Keum boo – to this ancient Korean gilding technique which, literally translated, means ‘attached gold’. This simple gilding process enables you to permanently attach an ultra-fine layer of pure gold to the surface of solid silver. Keum Boo offers a simple, reliable and affordable way to incorporate the warmth of gold into your designs without the added expense of working in gold sheet or wire.
  • Stone Setting – Up your stone-setting game as we explore advanced bezel setting skills. which will explore all the different variations of the bezel setting including decorative gallery wires, and even tube setting, which would allow you to include faceted stones in your pieces. And if you’ve never set a stone before, we’ll introduce you to our vast collection of cabochons and you can make your very first bezel setting!

This course aims to instill confidence as you advance your studio practice with new techniques. Your tutor will give a wide range of practical demonstrations which will be spread throughout the course, giving lots of time to practice and experiment with new techniques. This course is geared towards skill building that will influence your longer jewellery journey and is not about creating finished pieces of jewellery. You will leave with a comprehensive set of new skills, notes, and samples to help you put these into practice and create finished pieces in your home studio.

You should only book this Summer School if they already have a reasonable level of workshop experience. You will need to be proficient in all the basic jewellery techniques (sawing, filing, forming, soldering). You should be confident use of both handheld and large sievert torches as we will not cover these during the course. Please get in touch with us if you are unsure if this class is for you.
