Build a Foundation in Enamel

Join award-winning enamel jeweller Elizabeth Jane Campbell for an extended three-day Summer School designed for beginners. This immersive course introduces the essential processes of enamelling, guiding you from preparing metal through to creating colourful, finished jewellery.

Ideal for makers wishing to introduce colour, surface pattern and texture into their practice, the course balances clear demonstrations with structured time to practise and experiment. This course also provides the essential foundation required for progression to our Intermediate and Advanced Enamelling Summer Schools.

What You Will Learn

  • Preparing metal for enamelling

  • Safe and confident kiln use

  • Sifting techniques

  • Sgraffito

  • Stencilling and stamping

  • Using graphite for line and mark-making

  • Finishing enamel pieces and attaching simple findings

Throughout the three days, demonstrations are delivered in manageable stages, allowing you to build understanding gradually and develop control at the kiln.

Course Structure

Day One – Foundations

An introduction to enamelling processes, materials and kiln practice. Through live demonstrations and sample discussions, you will gain confidence in preparing metal and applying your first layers of enamel.

Day Two – Technique & Surface

Focus shifts to decorative techniques and design development. Through guided exercises and group discussion, you will explore pattern, layering and surface variation.

Day Three – Consolidate & Create

You will consolidate your learning by developing a small series of enamel samples into finished pieces. Basic findings, such as earring hooks or pendant fittings, will be introduced to help you complete wearable work.
