Level: Intermediate – This course is ideal for students with prior jewellery-making experience who want to expand both their technical skills and creative design approach. To get the most from the workshop, you should already be confident with saw piercing and soldering.
In this class, you’ll explore the art of dimensional design while creating a unique shadow box pendant. Shadow boxes are crafted from layered frames and shapes, forming miniature wearable dioramas with striking depth and detail. Your pendant’s theme is entirely your choice—whether deeply personal or purely decorative—but we’ll also provide template elements to help guide your design process.
Working with silver, copper, and brass, you’ll start by building a frame and background, then use sweat soldering to layer your chosen elements into a cohesive design. For those seeking an extra challenge, you’ll also have the chance to experiment with mixed media—such as wood, aluminium, or paper—using cold connections to integrate them seamlessly into your pendant.
By the end of the course, you’ll not only leave with a finished piece of jewellery but also a deeper understanding of how to construct designs with depth, structure, and personal expression.

Techniques covered:

  • planning a design that successfully combines a variety of elements
  • sweat soldering
  • riviting

Students should already be confident with saw piercing and soldering before taking this course.
