Description

Experimental Sand Casting
Sunday 19th April

Level: Intermediate – previous experience required. This sand casting workshop is ideal for those who have some previous studio experience and are comfortable working with both butane handheld torches and larger propane torches.

Join us at CSSJ for an inspiring hands-on sand casting workshop, where one of the oldest casting techniques is explored with a contemporary jewellery-making approach. Sand casting is an accessible, enjoyable introduction to casting and an excellent way to reuse scrap silver from previous projects, making it both creative and economical.

During the morning session, you’ll learn which shapes are best suited to sand casting and how to prepare a successful mould. We’ll guide you through calculating silver weights to ensure a reliable pour every time, and for those interested, we’ll explore casting heat-tolerant stones directly into your designs.

The course also looks at common casting issues found in small-scale jewellery work, practical troubleshooting techniques, and essential health and safety procedures when working with molten non-ferrous metals such as silver, bronze, and brass.

While you enjoy your lunch break, your experienced tutor will safely carry out all molten metal pours. In the afternoon, you’ll return to learn how to remove sprues, refine your cast pieces, and finish them to a high standard. You’ll also be shown how to attach findings, leaving the workshop with a unique, finished silver pendant.
