Level: Intermediate. Prior completion of beginner enamelling workshops (with Elizabeth or another provider) is essential.

* Please check the important notes at the foot of the page regarding important information about food and drink

This three-day mid-week Intermediate Summer School is designed for makers ready to move beyond the fundamentals and develop greater precision, layering and design confidence.

Held during the week, the course offers dedicated studio time away from weekend demands — an opportunity to immerse yourself fully in process, problem-solving and refinement.

Join award-winning Enamel artist Elizabeth Jane Campbell for a special extended Enamel workshop for those who already have basic enamelling skills under their belts and are looking to level up their use of colour & kiln work. Over the course of three days, you will learn an extensive range of intermediate decorative techniques such as champlevé, basse taille and cloisonné. Practical demonstrations will be spread throughout the course, giving you plenty of time to practise, experiment and develop your work in enamel.

Participants can also bring along designs/ideas or work-in-progress to get guidance and advice.

Your Tutor

Elizabeth Jane Campbell is an Edinburgh-based jeweller specialising in enamel. A graduate of Edinburgh College of Art, she refined her focus on enamelling during a period of study at the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design. She later completed a year as Artist in Residence at the Glasgow School of Art before establishing her own studio in Edinburgh. Elizabeth has exhibited widely across the UK and internationally, and her work is held in both private collections and public collections, including the National Museum of Scotland and The Goldsmiths’ Company Permanent Collection. Alongside her studio practice, she is committed to sharing her knowledge of enamelling through thoughtful, skills-focused teaching.

Day 1: Advanced Techniques & Design:

Decorative techniques and approach to design will be taught through live demonstrations & group discussions. Students will advance their experimentation by introducing more advanced techniques.

Day 2: Cold connections, Riveting & Frames:

Continue building your technique library and learn to safely rivet and frame enamel work without damaging or cracking pieces whilst enhancing the final outcomes from a design perspective.

Day 3: Consolidate & Create

Students will have the chance to create a small collection of finished pieces using the techniques that they have learned with Elizabeth, and of course, she will be on hand to offer advice and expertise.

What to bring:

  • We’ll provide all the things you will need for the Enamelling Summer School, including tools, copper blanks and silver findings. However, if you want to make a particularly large piece or additional pieces, extra copper and silver can be purchased directly from the school.
  • Please bring along glasses if you need them.
  • Wear appropriate clothing and footwear for a studio environment, including closed-toe shoes. Why not treat yourself to a CSSJ-branded apron to make you feel right at home?
  • If you have long hair, please wear it up
  • If you are the type of person who prefers to arm yourself with some knowledge ahead of time, then we have prepared some Pinterest boards filled with enamel information and inspiration just for you!
  • Students will not be permitted to eat lunch in the studio due to health and safety issues relating to enamel powders. This means you will need to arrange to eat lunch at a cafe/ outdoors/ in your car, etc.
