Wet Laying (packing) Enamel Masterclass
About the course:
Enamel is essentially a composition of glass, coloured with mineral oxides. It is ground to a very fine grain size in water, then applied to the piece of silver and fired in a very hot kiln until the tiny grains fuse together to form a fairly smooth, shiny surface. Enamel colour is permanent and will not fade, it is however glass and has to be treated with some care.
This is an exciting, fine enamelling course and will cover the washing and grinding of enamels in preparation for wet packing. This allows much more scope for controlled and detailed work. In the workshop we will work with fine wires (cloisonné) and gold and silver leaf. Students will create a variety of enamel samples as they experiment, finishing with a completed pendant or pair of earrings.
Students are encouraged and guided on how to incorporate some of their own techniques in to the wet packing journey and students are welcome to bring examples of their own work as a starting point to discuss ideas.
**This is a Masterclass for intermediate Jewellery makers and for those who have already completed the Introduction for Enamel Weekend. **
Sheila McDonald originally trained at the Glasgow School of Art and is an artist designer working in silver and vitreous enamel.
