Wet Laying Enamel with Sheila McDonald

Wet Laying (packing) Enamel Masterclass

Level: Intermediates

About the course:

Enamel is essentially a composition of glass, coloured with mineral oxides. It is ground to a very fine grain size in water, then applied to the piece of silver and fired in a very hot kiln until the tiny grains fuse together to form a fairly smooth, shiny surface. Enamel colour is permanent and will not fade, it is however glass and has to be treated with some care.

This is an exciting, fine enamelling course and will cover the washing and grinding of enamels in preparation for wet packing. This allows much more scope for controlled and detailed work. In the workshop we will work with fine wires (cloisonné) and gold and silver leaf. Students will create a variety of enamel samples as they experiment, finishing with a completed pendant or pair of earrings.

Students are encouraged and guided on how to incorporate some of their own techniques in to the wet packing journey and students are welcome to bring examples of their own work as a starting point to discuss ideas.

**This is a Masterclass for intermediate Jewellery makers and for those who have already completed the Introduction for Enamel Weekend. **

Your Tutor:

Sheila McDonald originally trained at the Glasgow School of Art and is an artist designer working in silver and vitreous enamel. Her painterly work incorporates many traditional jewellery and silversmithing skills, alongside engraving, etching and stone setting. After many years living and working in Norfolk, Sheila moved back to Scotland last year and is now working from her studio in Edinburgh.

What to bring:

We’ll provide all the things you will need to start exploring the world of wet packed enamel! Copper and all tools will be available plus small silver discs for the final outcomes.

Please bring along glasses if you need them and wear appropriate clothing for a studio environment including closed-toe shoes. If you have long hair please wear it up and bring a cloth face mask to wear if required. Lunch is not provided but you can bring lunch to eat in the studio or we can advise you of nearby places to buy food. Refreshments provided.

Since you are with us for the weekend maybe you would like to wear a professional CSSJ apron to really feel at home! Available to purchase here.

And if you are the type of person who prefers to arm yourself with some knowledge ahead of time then we have prepared a Pinterest board filled with enamel information and inspiration just for you!

**Please note: classes may be cancelled due to lack of attendees. In the unlikely event, you will be fully refunded and notified the day before the class is scheduled**
