About the course:
Our week-long jewellery summer school for beginners is a fantastic opportunity to explore what we do here at the School, meet our tutors and enjoy a week of creative inspiration. Held over five consecutive days, Tuesday – Saturday, in our light, spacious studio in Dunblane, this course is an opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of jewellery making under expert tuition. The Summer School is an ideal introduction for novices!
Transforming a sheet of silver into a piece of jewellery can be a fulfilling and exciting creative process. This intensive jewellery summer school for beginners will introduce you to the traditional techniques and tools used to make jewellery. The aim of this course, using demonstrations and structured guidance from the tutor, is to instil confidence as you learn techniques such as sawing, soldering, annealing, filing, texturing and shaping. Many of these skills can easily be perfected at home so this is the ideal kick-starter week for a longer jewellery journey. It is also ideal if you just want to come along and create for the week.
You will start by experimenting with copper before progressing on to silver to make your final showstopper pieces. Over the week you may even manage to create a small collection of jewellery!
Your Tutor: Jenny Deans is an award winning Jeweller based at Coburg House Art Studios in Leith, Edinburgh. She creates elegant contemporary jewellery which has been exhibited both nationally and internationally. She has taken part in the prestigious Goldsmiths’ Fair exhibition in London and the Elements Festival of Jewellery, Silver and Gold in Edinburgh. Her work is based on repeating elements of silver and gold wire which she uses to create sculptural pieces of jewellery with a feeling of flow and movement incorporated into each design. Her inspiration comes from repeating patterns, textures and forms found in nature and architecture.
What to bring: Only ideas needed! We’ll provide all the things you will need to start making amazing jewellery including tools, copper & a small amount of sheet silver. You can purchase extra silver and other materials at cost price during the course if needed.
