Absolute Beginners Jewellery Summer School with Jan Rooney. Level: Beginners
About the course: Our week-long beginners jewellery summer school is a fantastic opportunity to explore what we do here at the School, meet our tutors and enjoy a week of creative inspiration. Held over five consecutive days in our light, spacious studio overlooking the River Allan in Dunblane, this course is an opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of jewellery making under expert tuition. The Summer School is an ideal introduction for novices.
Transforming a sheet of silver into a piece of jewellery can be a fulfilling and exciting creative process. This intensive course will introduce you to the traditional techniques and tools used to make jewellery. The aim of this course, using demonstrations and structured guidance from the tutor, is to instil confidence as you learn techniques such as sawing, soldering, annealing, filing, texturing and shaping. You can perfect many of these skills at home so this is the ideal kick-starter week if you want to embark on a longer jewellery journey. It is also ideal if you just want to come along and create for the week.
You’ll start by experimenting with copper before progressing on to silver for final pieces. Over the week you may even be able to create a small collection of jewellery!
Your Tutor: Jan Rooney – Jan’s exploration of different cultures is central to her jewellery designs in mixed materials. She absorbs her surroundings and then develops and creates beautiful designs that evoke memories through their association, form, shape, colour and texture. Studying in Japan inspired Jan’s style and the variety of materials she works with. Her inspiration has continued to evolve with subsequent travels, and you will see subtle flavours of Morocco, India, and Mexico, just to name a few of the countries she has visited, visible in her mixed media work. Jan was formerly the owner of Au Boutique and jewellery school in Glasgow, and she joins us with many years of teaching experience behind her. She teaches on some of our regular evening and daytime classes.
