Stone Setting in Wax with Shirley Lowe

Saturday 30th August

Level: Intermediate

This one-day, intermediate-level class will develop your wax skills to allow you to incorporate carved settings for gemstones.  Wax carving is a versatile technique that lends itself to both organic and geometric forms that can be hard to achieve with traditional sheet metal and wire. The ability to create stone settings in wax can further elevate your designs in addition to saving time and money. During this course, participants will make two simple rings that will include a setting for a 5mm round stone. Students will learn:
  • How to design and make a ring shank/pendant with a cabochon setting
  • How to design and make a ring shank with a tube/collet-style setting for a faceted stone
  • How to repair breakages in wax
  • How to finish waxes to a professional standard
  • Time permitting, students may make another smaller flush or tube setting carved from flat wax.
This class is aimed at makers who have already worked in wax and have a basic knowledge of traditional bezel or tube settings in metal. The finished wax rings will not be sent for casting after the session however the course will explain the lost wax casting method and your tutor will advise you on how to set up an account with a casting company and what to expect at each stage; from posting off your wax, to receiving your completed casting.
Your tutor: Shirley Lowe is CSSJ’s expert on all things wax. She teaches our regular weekly classes as well as wax carving workshops. Trading under the name Verdant Jewellery, Shirley tries to find a balance between making the jewellery she loves and protecting the environment around her. She uses recycled metals, pre-loved stones and natural yarns in her work while reducing or removing any harmful chemicals used in the process.
