Precious Metal Clay – Advanced 2 Day Workshop with Christina Hirst

19 & 20 November

In stock

Silver Clay Weekend Workshop. Level: Advanced –  suitable for students who have completed the Silver Clay Weekends prior to January 2022.

About the Weekend: Silver Clay was developed by Mitsubishi Materials. Using fine silver dust, an organic binder and water, they produced a clay like material which is very easy to manipulate and is perfect for producing organic textures and form. The water evaporates during drying, the organic binder burns away during firing to leave pure silver. During this course we will build on the skills learnt in the beginners weekend and add to those with skills such as:

Advanced bead and hollow form making.
Advanced techniques to form wire and sheet.
Fusing different types of wire into silver clay to make more complex jewellery without soldering.
Building stone settings using silver clay.
Adding colour by firing enamels with silver clay.

A structured start is followed by guided independent practice.

About your tutor: Christina Hirst trained at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (DJCAD) gaining a Master of Design by research, for a study of (the then new material) Silver Clay. She has taught the use of Silver Clay for nearly 20 years and also taught for 10 years on the Jewellery and Metal Design degree course at DJCAD.

Materials included in the course fee:
20g, up to 10cm of fine silver, steel wire, 2 kiln safe stones and enamel powders. Any materials
over this can be purchased during the weekend from CSSJ at cost price. The school has a good stock of silver clay, fine silver wire, silver chain, findings and sterling silver wire.
