This class will introduce you to the marvellous possibilities of mixed-metal with award-winning silversmith, Hazel Thorn. Covering different approaches and techniques, students will learn how to combine base metal and silver to create colour and pattern. The day will start with an introductory talk, which will be followed be a series of short demonstrations on different methods. Students will then have time to make some small samples, to try a few different things with guidance and support.
The class will cover multiple ways of creating pattern, but the variations are endless. Please feel free to bring along some of your favourite visual material if you would like to (whether it’s photographs, drawings, textile patterns, or anything else) and the tutor can offer advice on how you might translate these into a mixed-metal pattern.
Basic patination techniques will be covered during the workshop and instruction will be given for other results which can be achieved at home.
This workshop is suitable for both beginners and more experienced students who wish to learn a new technique to bring pattern into their jewellery projects. All tools and materials are provided.
10 am – 4:30 pm with a break for lunch. Please bring along glasses if you need them and wear appropriate clothing for a studio environment including closed toe shoes. If you have long hair please wear it up. Lunch is not provided but you are welcome to bring a lunch to eat in the studio or we can recommend places nearby where you can buy a lunch.
**Please note: classes may be cancelled due to lack of attendees. In the unlikely event, you will be fully refunded and notified the day before the class is scheduled**
