Description

Engraving Masterclass with Dario Batzella

Level: Intermediate/ Advanced.

About the course:

An exciting Engraving Masterclass with Dario Batzella for those with previous jewellery experience. This two-day course is a great opportunity to learn the art of engraving. Firstly students will learn how to prepare a graver and plate before moving on to begin perfecting the skills of basic core cuts whilst exploring how to translate them into designs. Students will focus on repeat patterns and mark making to create textured surfaces that can stand alone or be used as a base for transparent enamels. Over the weekend the class will develop a solid base knowledge to apply in future jewellery and silversmithing projects.

Day One: Skill tutorial and practice: Demonstration of how to prepare a graver and all the aspects of sharpening, with explanations of different types of gravers and their uses. Students will prepare copper plates and practice cutting techniques. In the afternoon, students will learn how to approach design for engraving.
Day Two: Design and Create: Students will draw up, design and engrave their own plate/item. Students are welcome to bring their own pieces on this day to work on with the advice of Dario.
Please note that this is a skill-building weekend and does not have a prescribed final outcome.

Your Tutor:

Having studied several techniques, including engraving, at the Italian mint in Rome, Dario Batzella is a professional engraver based in Edinburgh. He has created award-winning pieces and won the Goldsmiths’ Silver Award in Senior Engraving in 2019.
