Description
Creative Wax Masterclass
Saturday 2nd November
level: Intermediate
Join us for a full day, intermediate masterclass in creative wax and explore a variety of wax techniques in this skill building workshop, including Japanese Mitsuro-Hikime and found object collage.
Mitsuro-Hikime
In the morning we’ll introduce you to Japanese Mitsuro-Hikime wax. The name of this tactile substance translates from Japanese as honey wax, and drawn texture. If you gently warm it by hand Mitsuro wax becomes pliable like toffee and can be stretched and manipulated, creating enticing ripples and striations. When cast in silver your Mitsuro jewellery will take on the appearance of fluidity and softness otherwise difficult to achieve in silver.
Wax collage and mould making
In the afternoon we’ll create small scale collages using found and natural objects and layered textures. We’ll learn how to make moulds from your low-relief compositions, and cast multiple wax masters, ready to be sent off and cast in silver. Casting from moulds is a great way to efficiently and accurately create multiples without having to replicate each component by hand. Why not check out our Pinterest Boards for a bit of inspiration to get you started?
For both techniques we’ll explain how to calculate the cost of casting in silver from the weight of your wax. We’ll discuss the possibility of creating a master mould and what to expect when your work is returned from the casters. You will leave with a collection of waxes finished to a high standard, and details of the process for sending them away to be cast in silver. For an additional cost you can leave your waxes with us so we can send them for casting and return them to you at a later date.
Level
The creative wax masterclass is an intermediate class for jewellers who have worked before in blue wax or have some silver jewellery making experience. You will leave having learned new skills to apply in your own studio and with a collection of samples, but not finished pieces. If you haven’t used blue wax before why not check out our programme for upcoming Carve and Cast Ring workshops?
